Tenement house, currently a residential building

Zielona Góra

The structure is an example of a tenement house with a lavish architectural decor and is an important element in the spatial layout of the city.

The process of development of individual zones and streets of the suburbs of Zielona Góra began as early as in the 14th century. The growing town needed land for residential, commercial and craft development. The area where the tenement house is located has evolved behind defensive walls quiet late, only in the 17th century. This suburban area, known as the ‘Lower’ (‘Dolny’), is visible on the map dating from 1784. The map shows the current al. Niepodległości, which was an unpaved road intersecting fields and public gardens at that time. Only when Zielona Góra was connected to a railway line in 1871, the road was regulated and plots of land were demarcated for future development, which was shaped mainly in the late 19th century and the early 20th century. Incomplete archival records on the tenement house have been preserved. The records suggest that the design of the building was created for Carl Muehle in 1894. The structure differs from the design in details in the window surrounds. The tenement house was probably erected at the turn of the 19th and 20th century. In 1945 the local government took over ownership of the tenement house and since that time the building has been occupied for residential purposes. During the post-war period no renovations were carried out to the building. The body of the building has been preserved in its original state without major changes. The disposition of the interior of the building has been slightly altered, which resulted from the division of spacious flats on each floor into several smaller ones. The structure is one of the most representative buildings in the city. The tenement house was erected in the eclectic convention and combines neoclassical and neo-baroque elements.

The building is free-standing and is located in the north-eastern part of the city, on the outskirts of the old town, at the junction of Niepodległości Ave. with Ułańska Street. The plot is surrounded by tall buildings and a concrete wall to the south-west. The tenement house was built on a floor plan which approximates the shape of a square. An annex added to the adjacent building adjoins the tenement house from the side of Ułańska Street. A rectangular porch which can be accessed by one-flight stairs. The porch is topped by a balustrade of the balcony. The structure consists of three storeys, covered with a flat roof. A basement extends under the whole building. The brick facades of the building feature architectural detail in the form of string courses and eave cornices, clipped gables above the windows, rustication, friezes and gable decorations. Most of the original window and door woodwork has been preserved. The ground floor of the staircase and the lobby features the original ceramic floor.

Limited access to the monument.
