History of the structure
Lubsko received a town charter in 1283 pursuant to the privilege granted by the Margrave of Meissen, Henry the Illustrious. The earliest mentions concerning the municipal authorities date back to the early 14th century and the town hall was first mentioned in a letter of bishop Caspar of 1456. The original, Gothic seat of the town authorities burned down during the town fire in 1496. The new town hall was erected in the years 1580-1582, based on the design of Antonio Alberto. There is no information about potential damage to the building as a result of subsequent fires of Lubsko or its redevelopments until the 19th century, when the interiors were subject to remodelling and the façades were renovated, thus obtaining a Baroque Revival costume. In the 1930s the architectural detailing of the façades was simplified, a portal was erected using artificial stone and a window was cut out in the front façade. In the 1960s cement boards were installed on the façades, thus covering the dilapidated plasters. During a renovation carried out in 2009 the Renaissance partitions and architectural details were restored.
Site description
The town hall is situated in the eastern part of the market square, neighbouring on the parish church. It is a building that follows the guidelines of the Renaissance style, set on a rectangular floor plan, made of brick and resting on stone foundations. A cuboid block is covered with a gable roof enclosed with volute-shaped gables. The gables of pronounced wall dormers located on longer sides of the town hall were arranged in an analogical way. There is a stone cartouche with a town crest over the main entrance, framed with a rusticated portal.
Visitor access. Heritage site accessible to the general public.
