palace Żyznów

Address
Żyznów

Location
woj. podkarpackie, pow. strzyżowski, gm. Strzyżów - obszar wiejski

The complex consisting of a manor house, stable, carriage house and park is a good representative of the residential architecture of the region, of great value in the voivodeship.

It is distinguished by the harmonious classicist form of the palace, the most magnificent arcaded residence in the region, and a fairly well preserved park.

History

In the first half of the 16th century, the village was owned by the Szufnarowski family and Strzyżowski family, then by the Bączalski family and Boner family, since 1585 by the Firlej family, in the 17th century by the Ciepielewski family, and from the late 18th century to around the mid-19th century by the Łempicki family. The next owners were the Straszewski family, and in 1890 ownership of the property passed to Łoś family, then to the Bylicki family.

The earliest mention of a wooden manor house in Żyznów dates back to the first half of the 16th century; the next seat, probably a fortified manor, was erected in the mid-17th century. The present palace was built on the initative of the Łempicki family in the first half of the 19th century, using the basements of an earlier building. At that time, the palace gardens were created by Maria Straszewska née Łempicka. In the later 19th century, the complex underwent renovation through the efforts of Count Witold Łoś, the then owner, during which a portico with a terrace was added facing the garden. In 1929, the new owners of Żyznów, the Bylicki family, undertook another renovation that involved covering the roof with wood shingles, among others. The Bylicki family was the last pre-war owners of the property. In 1945, the palace was used as a hospital for tuberculosis patients, and since 1949 the palace complex has housed an orphanage.

Description

The palace complex is located in the central part of the village, near the intersection with the road leading to Bonarówka, adjoins local roads to the west and south, the Stobnica river to the east, and utility buildings to the north.

The classicist palace was built in the middle of the complex, at the end of the axis formed by the entry alley with a driveway at the end and a decorative lawn. The building was erected on a floor plan in the shape of an elongated rectangle, with basement underneath some of its sections. It has a cuboidal multi-storey body adorned with a recessed portico in giant order at the front and a colonnaded portico with a terrace overlooking the garden. The building is covered with a hip roof. It was built of stone and brick on older stone basements; the roof is clad with ceramic tiles.

The front façade of the palace is eleven-axial, symmetrical, with a nine-axial recessed portico with eight columns supporting an architrave. The eastern, garden façade is nine-axial, with a colonnaded portico on the axis, which features six columns: two columns adjoining the walls and two pairs significantly protruding from the face, which support a deep terrace with a forged balustrade on the upper storey. The windows are rectangular in shape, with semicircular arches on the ground floor, much larger on the upper storey; all accentuated by simple surrounds, and on the garden façade, upper storey and at the front on the outermost axes additionally by window headers. Horizontal façade articulation was emphasised with strips in plasterwork on the ground floor, a strip of meanders between the storeys on the garden façade, and a simple cornice below the eaves. The interior layout was designed as symmetrical, two-bay, and has been partially altered after adaptation of the building for use as an orphanage. There are no components of historic décor and interior fittings.

Stables are located north-west of the palace, almost perpendicularly to it. The preserved cubic body, originally probably consisting of one storey, was extended upwards and is part of a larger building, the remnants of which are still visible in its west part. Currently, the building has a rectangular floor plan, multi-storey body at the front and one-storey body to the north, built of stone and brick, covered with a shed roof clad with eternit. The front, south façade was pierced by windows arranged on two storeys, to the north only on the ground floor; the east façade is embellished by massive buttresses. The building is ruined, damp, and partially unused.

The carriage house is located at the gate to the complex, on the south side of the entry avenue. It is a small wooden one-storey structure built on a rectangular floor plan, on stone basement, covered with a gable roof clad with ceramic tiles. Inside of it, there is a residential part and a room for a carriage.

The landscape park extends over two terraces descending to the Stobnica river. It features preserved old trees, oaks and elms arranged in a free layout, remains of an avenue of chestnuts and limes, and a pond with an island, gradually becoming overgrown.

The monument is partially open to visitors. The park may be viewed with permission; the palace, stables and carriage house are not open to visitors. The palace complex is used as an orpanage.
