Felicja Curyłowa’s homestead

residential building 1930s Zalipie

Address
Zalipie, 135

Location
woj. małopolskie, pow. dąbrowski, gm. Olesno

The village of Zalipie, located in the culture region of Powiśle Dąbrowskie, near the Vistula River valley and several kilometres north-east from Dąbrowa Tarnowska, is famous for its colorful paintings.

Its popularity comes from the painting talents of its residents. The walls of the houses, farm buildings, even wells, kennels, or fences are adorned with beautiful, colourful, floral ornaments. The colourful walls of the houses harmonise with the greenery and gardens full of flowers. The interiors are also richly decorated. Colourful patterns on furniture, walls, and ceilings, embroidered pillows and bedspreads, hand-painted pots and plates amaze with the richness of artistic motifs. The painting of buildings in Zalipie takes place in the period preceding Pentecost and alludes to the common practice of re-painting (refreshing) households upon the arrival of the spring. The main theme of the wall paintings are plants and flowers: bunches of flowers in baskets or jugs, freely arranged flowers, wreaths or garlands and small, colourful bands attached especially under the paintings. The images are painted with pure paints only, without mixing, and using self-made brushes. Water paints are used or ones mixed with milk or egg white. It was Władysław Hickel who discovered the Zalipie folk art. In 1906 he published an article in the Lud magazine where he admired the originality of the paintings.  For more than ten years, in June each year, a competition has been held in Zalipie to select the most beautifully painted house. The event is known as the Painted Cottage contest. The works of the Zalipie female artists are exhibited in the Painters’ House.

History

The homestead was built by Felicja Curyłowa and her husband in the 1930s. Felicja Curyłowa (1904-1974) was an outstanding Zalipie-based painter, one of the first participants of the annual Painted Cottage events. After her death, the property was purchased by the state Cepelia company; in 1978 it was handed over to the Regional Museum in Tarnów. It houses the museum of folk art (Branch of the Regional Museum in Tarnów). In 1981 the so-called “poor hut” was relocated to a plot adjacent to Cyrułowa’s property. The homestead is located in the south part of the village, in the Nowiny hamlet. Preserved in situ, it consists of a house, stable, barn, and well.

Description

The buildings are arranged in the letter U. The entire museum area is surrounded by a woven fence. The buildings are wooden and similar to other structures in the area. The façades are ornately decorated with colourful flowers. The homestead has been preserved almost exactly as it was the artist’s life. The interiors feature original furniture, tableware, oil prints, and the artist’s paraphernalia; the walls and the stove are decorated with painted flowers. Exhibited in the house are also the first paintings by Felicja Curyłowa.

The site is accessible during the opening hours of the museum.
