Address
Włodzienin

Location
woj. opolskie, pow. głubczycki, gm. Branice

The two-part medieval hillfort (?) in Włodzienin (site 2a), with picturesque ruins of a Gothic church and an old cemetery, is a valuable archaeological find, which has a preserved field form.

In the close vicinity of the find, there are three other defensive structures - hillforts, this Jędrychowice-Włodzienin complex located on the Troja River is unique in the country.

History of the structure

The hillfort in Włodzienin (site 2a) generally dates back to the Middle Ages. However, it must be said that the archaeological research of the site has not provided much information and both the function and chronology of the monument is quite mysterious and enigmatic.

Description of the structure

The presumed two-part hillfort in Włodzienin (site 2a) is located in the south-eastern part of the village, directly by the Włodzienin - Dzbańce road, on its eastern side. The find is located on the high flood terrace of the Troja River, next to the floodplain valley. The site features the ruins of a Gothic church and an old, overgrown cemetery.

The presumed hillfort consists of two parts, which are oval in plan. The area of the object (plateau) is approx. 40-50 ares. The southern part with the ruins of the church is bigger and higher.

In 1970, Michał Parczewski carried out a survey at the archaeological site, which, however, had a small scope - 2 excavations. He discovered 5 skeletal graves, a pit (perhaps older than the cemetery), a cultural layer and several dozen movable artefacts. In general, the research did not contribute to a better recognition of the site and did not significantly increase our knowledge about it.

Visitor access. The site is accessible all year round.
