The hill fort in Trzek is one of the oldest lowland strongholds on the periphery of the Gniezno region.

It is situated in the centre of an intensive open settlement.

Location and description

The hill fort is located in the Września Plain (Polish: Równina Wrzesińska) mesoregion. It it situated on flat terrain, among fields, in the vicinity of the old road from Kostrzyn to Kórnik, approx. 3 km to the south-west of Kostrzyn, 350 m to the north of the village of Trzek. Local residents call it “the Swedish trench”.

The hill fort has a circular shape with dimensions of 71 x 78 m. It is surrounded with a six-metre-high rampart and a partially filled moat which is 8 m wide. The hill fort courtyard occupies an area of 34 x 36 m. The whole site is overgrown with trees and shrubs.

History

The hill fort in Trzek served its purpose in the early Middle Ages (8th to mid-10th century), surrounded by ancillary settlements. Most likely, it served the function of a centre for the local management.

Condition and results of archaeological research

The site was first inspected at the end of the 19th century by Władysław Jażdżewski and Alfred Götze. It was then that the stone pavement on the courtyard and traces of objects at the foot of the rampart were discovered. It was also found that the rampart was mainly made of sand.

In 1982, surface studies and exploratory excavations of the hill fort’s courtyard were performed by Barbara Kirschke and Alina Łosińska. They recorded the presence of a cultural layer which was approx. 0.55 m in thickness. Abundant historical material was discovered in the hill fort area, e.g. pieces of pottery and animal bones, an iron bucket handle, bone awls, and a cross-shaped iron object. Around 1875, a plaited silver chain was accidentally discovered. Due to the significant content of silver, the find was deemed a purposely hidden treasure.

Private property — the site can be visited from the outside.
