Trzebiechów, Parkowa 4

The palace complex is an interesting example of architecture inspired by the French Renaissance residences.

History

The knight estates in Trzebiechów belonged to the von Troschke family from 1442 to 1724. At their initiative a single-storey manor house built of stone and brick was erected in the late 16th or the early 17th century. In 1765 the estate found itself in the hands of a ducal family von Reuss. In the 1830s a landscape park was created on the basis of the former one, originating most probably from the 17th century. Paul Lorenz from Zwickau was the author of the design. In 1876 Heinrich Reuss and his wife, Duchess Marie Anna Alexandrienne von Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach, began redeveloping the residence. The works lasted until around 1880. In 1901 a side wing and a representational gate on the palace axis were erected. At the same time, the remodelling of utility buildings was completed. In 1943 the estate in Trzebiechów was taken over by dukes Bentheim-Tecklenburg. After World War II the estate was nationalised. Until the late 1960s the palace remained abandoned. In the years 1970-1984 it was adapted to serve as a school and has continued to serve this purpose to this day.

Description

The complex is located in the middle of the village, on the northern side of the Sulechów-Wschowa road. The main element of the complex is a palace erected in the spirit of the French Renaissance Revival. It is situated centrally in the southern part of the complex, preceded by a vast courtyard and featuring a gate on the axis. Manor farm buildings from the 18th and 19th century are clustered on both sides of the gate (outbuildings, stable, carriage house and riding hall). They were adapted to administrative, educational and residential purposes. There is a park spanning approx. 11 ha on the north side of the complex.

The palace is a masonry structure, designed on an “L” shaped floor plan, with a basement and two storeys. There are three cuboid towers on the west side and at the east wing. The corps de logis and the wing are covered with mansard roofs with wall dormers and dormer windows. The axis of the front façade and the façade overlooking the garden is accentuated by three-axial, three-storey projections covered with mansard roofs. The façades are embellished with profiled cornices, window surrounds and rustication, while the projections are additionally adorned with pilasters, balconies and pinnacles. A vast clearing surrounded by a mass of trees is found in the park, on the palace axis. Deciduous trees prevail in the tree stands: pedunculate oak, common hornbeam, common maple as well as small-leaved and broad-leaved lime. Ruins of the Romantic temple have been preserved in the north-western part of the park, on a small hill near the pond.

Heritage site accessible to the general public.
