Castle

castle 13th - 16th c. Szaflary

Address
Szaflary

Location
woj. małopolskie, pow. nowotarski, gm. Szaflary

The mediaeval castle was built on a limestone projection, whose north and east slopes form a vertical cliff.

Today, the site is occupied by a summer house alluding to a brick pavilion in form. It was erected at the end of the 19th century by the Uznański family, the then owners of the village of Szaflary.

History

The origin of the castle is not clear. Originally, the Podhale region was the royal property. In 1234 King Henryk the Bearded bequested it to the Kraków voivode Teodor Gryfita. Difficulties related to the management and development of the body of landed estate urged Teodor to bring Cistercians from Jędrzejów to nearby Ludźmierz. The chronicler Jan Długosz credited the order with the foundation of the fortified structure in Szaflary. This is questioned by some historians. The existence of the Szaflary castle is confirmed the 1338 sources. The records mention the local burgrave, Piotr of Słupia, referred to as “castellan” in the documents. The sources hold that Szaflary was incorporated into the royal estate. Later, the castle was in the hands of tenants, including the families of Ratułd, Pieniążek, and Komorowski. Its ceased to serve its purpose at the turn of the 15th century.

Description

Excavation research exposed a stone perimeter wall erected on the edges of a rocky hill. The entrance to the castle was from the west, through a bridge over a deep moat, cutting off the projection the hinterland. The layout of the castle’s internal structure is not very clear. Perhaps, it was limited to a residential keep on a square plan, located in the middle of the projection. In the 19th century, the Uznański family built a pavilion on its foundations. The remaining mediaeval buildings leaning against the perimeter wall might have been wooden. Given the results of the research conducted so far, the fortified complex in Szaflary can be assumed to have been erected in the second half of the 13th century or even towards the end of it. Who was the founder of the castle remains an open question. Most likely, it was the Cistercians.

The property is privately owned; access is limited.
