History of the structure
The exact date of construction of the shrine is not known, it dates back to the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century. It is located in Mokre Łany, a district of Strzelce Opolskie situated to the east of a large city park. Mokre Łany (Wet Meadows), named in contrast to Suche Łany (Dry Meadows) on the opposite side of the park, was founded in the 16th century. In the village there was a grange belonging to Jerzy von Redern, the owner of the castle in Strzelce. Mokre Łany along with Suche Łany were incorporated into the urban area of Strzelce Opolskie in 1926-29.
Description of the structure
The free-standing shrine is located on private property at the intersection of Wawrzyńca Świerzego
and Ujazdowska Street, by the eastern bank of a small watercourse, separating the plot from the street.
It is set on a square-shaped plan, with an entrance opening on the western side.
It has the shape of a regular cuboid covered with a hipped roof, above which rises a wooden openwork bell turret. The turret is covered with a tent-shaped roof with a wrought-iron cross on a bulbous wooden base.
The shrine is built of limestone and brick and plastered inside and outside. The construction of the bell tower is wooden; the lower roof is covered with shingles, the upper one with sheet metal.
The elevations of the shrine are very simple, almost devoid of decorative elements except for a brick crowning cornice, a plaque with an ornamental IHS monogram above the entrance opening and delicate frame borders. The side elevations (north and south) have small windows, and on the western side - an entrance opening, closed with a rounded sharp arch.
The interior is single-space, covered with a flat ceiling. Contemporary ceramic flooring. The door that closes the entrance is wooden, single-leaf, with a glazed top.
Inside there are folk figures of St. John of Nepomuk and the Virgin Mary. A bell is hung in the turret.
The shrine is in very good condition after the renovation and has retained its historic character.
Visitor access: the structure is open to visitors.
