Manor complex

manor house 1st half of the 20th c. Smardzowice

Address
Smardzowice, Szkolna 8

Location
woj. małopolskie, pow. krakowski, gm. Skała - obszar wiejski

A valuable example of manor house exhibiting architectural solutions referring to the tradition of the old Polish mansion and a search for a national style.

History

The former manor house (in the same spot) was built at the end of the 19th century (marked on old maps). The current one dates back to 1933 and was erected or rebuilt based on the previous one. The designer and the contractor are unknown. Until 1945, when it was taken over by the state, it served as a villa. Later, it housed a school and later, after the opening of a new school in Smardzowice (across the street in the place of the former farm buildings), a school library and an apartment of the school teacher. Until 2007, the house had been rented to the teacher as a council flat. Today, the manor house is probably a private property. Around 2009 a renovation began but was soon abandoned. The only works covered the removal of external plaster and the sealing of the roof. Currently, the house is abandoned and badly neglected. The overgrowth garden in the immediate vicinity of the house indicates that this has not changed for at least several years.

Description

The manor is situated on the north-west edge of the village, by the road from Maszyce to Skała. Originally, it occupied the centre of a large plot, now divided into three smaller ones.

Closed with an orchard from the east and meadows from the north and south. From the front, west side, the area is separated from the road by a mesh fence on metal posts. The manor house is surrounded by a hedge, fruit trees, and hazel.

It is built of wood on a stone foundation; it is plastered and has partial basement. It is built on a rectangular plan. The central part of the front façade features a two-column recessed portico. Above, there is a mansard with a row of small-light windows and an entrance to the balcony. In the front and side roof planes, there are single eyebrow windows. The garden façade is irregular and with a small entry annexe. The roof mansard has a row of windows. The whole building is covered with a mansard roof. Under the eaves, decoratively profiled rafter tips can be seen on all façades.

The manor house and the surrounding greenery are very neglected. The house is available and unwatched. Access is hindered by the lavish greenery around. Despite the short distance (about 20+ metres), the house is practically invisible from the road.
