Ryglice

As a result of partial reconstruction and renovation, the granary has regained its original shape and has retained its most significant historical, artistic, and landscape values.

The local authorities intend to advertise the monument as one of the oldest preserved wooden farm buildings in Małopolska. The locals considered the granary a major landmark and attraction of Ryglice Commune.

History

The granary was erected in 1756.  It was one of the farm buildings of the palace and park complex established by the Ankwicz family, the owners of Ryglice. The facility was a storage for grain and produce and fulfilled this function until 1939. In the second half of the 20th century, the building was a storage for artificial fertilisers used by a local agricultural cooperative. During this period, the building underwent significant alterations: the roof truss was replaced (formerly a tiled, gable roof), and one of the gable walls was rebuilt of brick. Around 1998 the monument became the property of Ryglice Commune. Unused and abandoned for many years, it quickly fell into disrepair. In 2010 a project was launched in the local commune office to re-design and renovate the granary with the idea of turning it into a public and cultural facility serving the local community. In addition to the commune’s own contribution (PLN 536 thousand), funds were raised at the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage (PLN 134 thousand) and from the EU Rural Development Programme 2007-2013 - LEADER (PLN 298 thousand). In the years 2010-2012, the basement, foundation, walls and roof were renovated. The body of the building regained its historical appearance from 1915 (known from archival images). Also, wooden fittings and equipment were made necessary for the new function. The poor condition of some of the original construction material necessitated its thorough replacement. This was the case with the ceiling and floor boards, as well as door joinery. All original wooden items, if their technical condition allowed so, were re-used during the renovation works. As a result, the original framework of load-bearing and partition walls were preserved, except for the south wall which had to be completely reconstructed to replace the mid-20th-century structure.

Description

The granary is located in the centre of the village, on the west side of the road connecting Tarnów and Ryglice. It is part of a former manor complex, of which only the palace has survived (from the first half of the 18th century, rebuilt in the first half of the 19th and in the mid-20th century) along with part of a landscape park with fish ponds (from the first half of the 19th century). The granary is a single-storey, wooden log structure built on an elongated rectangular plan. It is set on a high brick foundation, partially with basement. The building has a shingled, hipped roof with dormers at the attic level. There is a gallery in the east roof panel, enclosed by two smaller dormers. Outside, along the front wall, there is a wooden platform that leads to the one-bay interior. The granary has three chambers, a small utility room on the ground floor and a usable loft. The front chamber houses a recreated, historical rustic room with a stove; another one has been turned into a middle-class room, the so-called parade chamber. Both rooms exhibit the equipment and items used in farmers’ households in Ryglice and the neighbouring villages in the 19th and 20th centuries; all of them have been donated by the local residents. The third room has been turned into a historical inn with benches and tables. The lost serves as an exhibition space for works by regional artists or as a conference room. A lintel beam has been preserved above one of the entrances with the Latin inscription confirming the date of construction of the granary: DIE 21 MAJI ANNO DNI 1756. Original are also the wrought iron bars in the sidelight windows, also providing ventilation of the interior. The granary hosts, among others, exhibitions, concerts, meetings, and lectures on the history and tradition of the Ryglice community and the Tarnów region. It is also a meeting place for local residents. The facility aspires to reach beyond the local community by making the granary part of the Wooden Architecture Route of Małopolska.

The site is open to visitors. Inside during the opening hours of the facility and during scheduled events.
