The Parish Church of All Saints in Rudawa is one of the most valuable historical monuments in the region of Małopolska. The centuries-old supervision by the Kraków Cathedral Chapter permitted the temple to maintained a high artistic level of its subsequent architectural alterations, and its equipment was constantly enriched with works of art that did not differ much from those made in Kraków in terms of artistic value and level of artistry.

History

The Gothic, oriented, brick church of All Saints in Rudawa was built on the site of an older temple (of the 12th century, subjected to the administration by the Kraków Cathedral Chapter) in several phases. The early-Gothic, rectangular, monk-bond brick chancel with a modest level of detail was built around 1300. Probably at the turn of the 15th century, a single-nave, late-Gothic body was erected from the west together with a porch. In 1541 a wooden, post tower was built over it. In 1614 saw the addition of a painted, Mannerist frieze inside the church body. In 1631 a Mannerist, two-level porch with a domed chapel was added from the south. In 1868, according to the design of Arch. Feliks Księżarski, the sacristy was enlarged and a wooden, corbel vault was installed (cross value in the chancel). Before 1783 the church graveyard was enclosed with a stone wall with a square morgue (in the corner), an entrance gate and a newer bell gable built on the wall.

Description

The temple stands on a hill in the middle of the village, several dozen metres to the north-west from the market square. It is surrounded by a stone wall. It is an oriented and multi-style building. The oldest, brick, early-Gothic chancel is embraced with pilaster strips and covered with a wooden, corbel cross vault and a gable roof. The late-Gothic nave was covered with a ceiling and a gable roof topped with an ave bell spirelet. The chapel above the south porch has a cupola with a lantern. A semicircular staircase tower touches the chapel. The sacristy adjoining the chancel from the south can be accessed via an oblique door with a latticework and an ogival portal. The low wooden tower with an overhanging extension, built over the west porch, reveals the traditional defensive features of a mediaeval tower system. Inside there are remnants of two layers of Gothic polychrome from the second half of the 14th century and from 1476; a Gothic crucifix from the beginning of the 15th century can be seen on the rood beam. A Gothic panel painting of the Virgin Mary with Child from around 1450 with Mannerist décor from the early 17th century and the late Baroque one from the 18th century. It enjoys the local worship and can be viewed in the main altar.

The structure can be viewed from the outside.
