Granary

utility building Racibórz

Address
Racibórz, Czynu Społecznego 14

Location
woj. śląskie, pow. raciborski, gm. Racibórz

One of the last surviving examples of farm granaries which had once been a common sight in the southern Opole region and the Racibórz, Głubczyce and Koźle districts in particular.

The building remains valuable today due to its well-preserved, unchanged silhouette and structure as well as the clarity of its original interior layout.

History

The granary was most likely erected in the early 19th century, forming part of a typical farm of a kind once common in the Racibórz region, consisting of the residential and utility buildings surrounding a quadrangular yard. From the moment of its construction, the building was subjected to renovation and maintenance works on an ongoing basis, the aim of which was both to fill in any gaps in its wattle-and-daub cladding and to ensure that its walls occasionally received a new coat of lime paint. Somewhere around the year 1960, the original slate roof cladding was replaced with fibre cement. The building is no longer in use, having stood abandoned for a few decades.

Description

The granary is located in the middle of Sudół, on the southern side of the Czynu Społecznego street, in an open area which had once been the site of a now-vanished farm. The building’s roof ridge runs in parallel to the road (side-gabled arrangement).

The building features a brick wall base supporting a wooden log structure, concealed beneath wattle-and-daub cladding covered with lime paint. The structure retains its distinctive, cuboid silhouette, designed on an elongated rectangular floor plan and covered with a hip roof with projecting eaves; it was designed as a two-storey structure with a basement. The basement level features vaulted ceilings of the barrel type, with sail vaults being used for the south-eastern part of the cellar. The remaining interiors - including those of the first floor - feature exposed beamed ceilings. The planked doors are a later addition to the structure.

Limited access to the historic building. Private property - the building can only be viewed from the outside.
