The church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Poźrzadło is an example of timber-frame ecclesiastical architecture with a harmonious, multi-component body and façades with an unconventional arrangement of structural elements.

History

A church in the village of Poźrzadło was mentioned for the first time in a document from 1249. It was a parish church belonging to the Diocese of Poznan. From 1350 the village was owned by the Johannites and after the secularisation of the order in 1810 it was incorporated in the royal domain. In 1877 general von Zastrow was an owner of the estate. The church building was mentioned in writing in 1647 and 1664. At that time, it was a wattle-and-daub structure. The current temple was built in years 1760-1766. A tower was added in 1859. Probably in the interwar period the building was partially redeveloped. Wooden elements were replaced with concrete ones on the ground floor on the west side, on the ground floor of the western wall of the south vestibule and in large parts of the north façade. Since the end of World War II the church has served the Catholics (it was consecrated on 16.03.1946). Most probably shortly after the war roof slate was replaced with roof tiles and sheet metal. In 1959 the tower lantern was clad in sheet metal and windows in the west wall were obscured. In 1987 the interior underwent renovation, including the painting of walls and covering the floor with terrazzo. In 1989 the roof and the tower were renovated.

Description

The church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary is located in a square in the centre of the village. The building is oriented. The church has a log and frame structure filled with bricks. It is an aisleless building, set on a rectangular floor plan, terminating at the east end in a semi-hexagon, diversified on the sides with annexes hosting side entrances, set on a floor plan similar to a square. The roof over the main body is of a gable type, passing into a three-sloped roof over the chancel. Gable roofs stretch over the side annexes. The quadrangular tower, located in the western section of the roof, is covered with a gable roof crowned with a lantern. The façades are accentuated by an arrangement of wooden log and frame structural elements, partially rebuilt in the west and north façade. The interior is covered with a beamed ceiling. The original fixtures and fittings include a gallery on the western wall, which houses a Gothic Revival organ cabinet, as well as galleries in side annexes.

Limited access to the historic building. It can be visited upon prior telephone arrangement.
