History
Czarnecki Square is situated in the Old Town, at the north-west corner of the Market Square. It was established in 1819 as a result of the parcelling out of 10 plots of land located between the streets: Żydowska, Krótka and Kościelna. The square was called Nowy Rynek (New Market) and later Plac Maślany (Butter Square). The corner house at number 9, made of brick, two-storey, with an outbuilding, was probably erected for Foma Życiński in the second quarter of the 19th century. It stood next to the inn called Under the Mother of God, because there was a painting of the Mother of God with the Child in the dormer window. In 1836, the corner plot and two adjacent plots were bought by the spouses Andrzej and Marianna Kinn. After Andrzej’s death, half of the property was inherited by Marianna Krochalska née Kinn and her children. In 1877, the property was bought by Fiszel Flattau, then by Eraz Antoni Klotze. In 1878, it had come into the ownership of Józef Socharski and ten years later - of Bolesław Bartenbach. In 1896, it became the property of Genoch Lejzor and Sura Frenkiel, who bequeathed it to their descendants. In 1924, in the southern part of the land plot, after the Frenkiel family had been expropriated, a street was laid out on the extension of Zamkowa Street. In the 1930s, the rooms on the ground floor of the house were converted into shops. After the Second World War, the premises became the property of the State Treasury, and then of the city.
