History

The church in Makowice was first mentioned in written sources dating back to 1372. The current church was constructed during the first half of the 16th century. The church was subsequently modernised somewhere around the year 1596 and then restored in years 1966-1968.

Description

The church is located in a depression in the middle of the village, in the vicinity of the nearby palace, park and manor farm complex. It is surrounded with a stone wall with a gate on the western side.

The church was designed on a Greek cross floor plan. The arms and the crossing of the naves feature cross-rib vaulting with rosettes adorning the keystones. The transept bays are separated from the nave by pointed-arch arcades. A two-storey annex with a sacristy on the ground floor level adjoins the church to the north, featuring a pointed-arch barrel vault in the ground floor section. To the south-west stands a rectangular porch with a groin vault, featuring a Renaissance roof parapet and a decorative stone portal. In addition, a pair of pointed-arch stone portals can also be found inside the church. At the top of the bay which houses the altarpiece there is a stone cartouche bearing the date 1596 as well as remnants of sgraffito decorations which have been obscured by a layer of plaster. The individual sections of the building are covered with gable roofs clad with roof tiles. An octagonal Baroque steeple with a bulbous cupola and roof lantern is positioned at the intersection of the roof ridges. In the corner between the southern bays of the church stands a round turret which conceals the staircase leading up to the former galleries.

Inside, one can admire fine examples of 16th-century ecclesiastical art: a stone altarpiece and baptismal font as well as numerous epitaph plaques.

The church may be viewed from the outside. It is possible to view the interior through the grillwork separating the porch from the nave.
