Address
Łyskowo

Location
woj. kujawsko-pomorskie, pow. tucholski, gm. Gostycyn

An exceptional example of utility architecture from the second half of the 19th century, this aviary is a unique phenomenon which has virtually no counterparts in the entire region.

History

The aviary originally formed part of a manor farm complex established in 1863. It was subsequently restored in the 1980s.

Description

The aviary, forming part of the manor farm complex located in the middle of the village of Łyskowo, was erected in 1863. The building is a three-storey structure designed on an octagonal floor plan, its roof surmounted by a tall, monumental roof lantern crowned with a cupola. The walls of the façades are accentuated with corner lesenes supporting counter-thrusting segmental arches, with the broad, moulded crowning cornice providing the finishing touch. The segment-headed doors and windows all follow a similar design. Of the eight walls of the aviary, seven feature a single door in the middle, positioned at the ground-floor level. Four of these doors are flanked by pairs of small windows. One of the walls which does not feature a doorway is pierced by a single, broad window. All of the walls of the building feature small, paired windows on all the upper levels, with each pair of windows resting on a common sill. The tall roof lantern is partitioned by a string course into two distinct storeys. The lower storey is adorned with low, corner pilasters, with the spaces between them occupied by arcaded blind windows on all sides except one, where a glazed window opening is present instead. The walls of the second storey are punctuated with blind oculi, replaced by circular, glazed windows of the same design in two of the walls. Inside, the building features a central staircase.
