Laskownica Mała

Location

The ring fort belongs to the tribal hillforts in Pałuki, on the border of northern Wielkopolska.

History

An upland hillfort, single-component, two-phase Sections of the rampart in the eastern part and west strongly levelled. On the basis of the surveys, it was found that the massive rampart on the northern side was rebuilt two or three times. Other sections were weaker and showed signs of simultaneous construction. According to E. Cnotliwy (1989/1990) the earth for the construction of the rampart was drawn from inside the hillfort, leaving a ditch stretching at the base of the fortifications. The oldest part of the rampart in the northern part was built of grey clayey sand and stones, above a layer of grey and yellowish sand and brown clayey sand forming the main core of the rampart. The second phase of the northern part of the rampart forms a separate layout, as a new wooden structure was built on the slope of the older rampart and covered with new layers of soil. The younger rampart burned down. According to the findings of E. Cnotliwy (ibid., pp. 176-7, p. 174) the first hillfort had a rampart of a horseshoe shape. In the second phase, a ring-shaped fortified hillfort was built. The inventory from the survey research includes fragments of hand-made vessels from the B-C phase? and in the secondary deposit, modern, wheel-turned vessels and clomps of pugging material. In the northern part of the settlement there is a modern Evangelical cemetery.

Description of the structure

Location of the structure. On the north-west shore of Podjezierskie lake, on a high promontory cut off from the upland by a ravine, about 500 m northeast of the buildings.

Description of the site. An upland ring fort, with a preserved and clearly legible rampart in the northern and eastern part. Other sections of the rampart have been significantly levelled. The base of the hillfort was 35x47 m; the original size of the inner yard was 25x30 m; in the second phase it was 25x35 m; the width of the rampart from the first phase was 4 to 5 m, in the second phase - 7 to 10 m, the height of the rampart was 2.5 to 3.5 m

History of the site. Laskownica Mała is mentioned in 1358; the hillfort has been known at least since the interwar period; it is listed in the register of historic monuments. Listed in 1980.

Progress and findings of archaeological research. A survey of the site by B. Stelmachowska in 1923, survey research by the Scientific Circle of the Adam Mickiewicz University Students in 1972, verification research in 1981 by archaeologists from the PP Archaeological and Conservation Studio from Szczecin, under the direction of Eugeniusz Cnotliwy; in 1985 research as part of the AZP (Archaeological Picture of Poland) project.

Visitor access. The building is open to the general public. Mostly covered with dense deciduous trees, only in the southern part used as a meadow.
