Manor house

manor house 1677 Laskowa

Address
Laskowa, 1

Location
woj. małopolskie, pow. limanowski, gm. Laskowa

An example of wooden residential building from the 17th century.

A richly polychrome-adorned ceiling has survived in the house’s former chapel.

History

The oldest reference to the hamlet of Laskowa goes back to 1402. From the Middle Ages until the second half of the 17th century, it belonged to the Laskowski family. The manor was erected in 1677 (as shown by the date on a roof framing brace). In 1689 the property was purchased by the Kraków bishop, Jan Małachowski. He decided to hand the house over to the congregation of Kraków missionaries of his own foundation as their seat. The congregation used the site as a centre of administration of their estate. The former living room was transformed into a chapel devoted to the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. At the end of the 18th century, the property was auctioned and disposed of. Its successive owners were the Skrzyński and Żochowski families of the Brodzic coat of arms. In 1929 the house went, through family connections, into the hands of Zygmunt Michałowski, of the Jasieńczyk coat of arms, from Dąbie near Szczyrzyc. In 1946 the manor house and the grange were seized by the State Land Fund. First, they housed the local commune office and later a youth hostel. Since 1992, the property has been in possession of its former owners, the Michałowski family, who renovated the decrepit building in the 1990s.

Description

The manor house stands near the centre of the village. It is a valuable example of the 17th-century Baroque manor house. It was built on a rectangular plan with a symmetrical, three-bay interior layout. The house is a one-level, wooden building built of larch wood in a log structure set on a stone foundation. It is covered with a high, multi-pitched “Polish” shingled roof (the so-called Kraków type). The façades are plastered in white. The three-axis west façade has the entrance to the hall in the central axis.  The oblong chamber, formerly used as a chapel, has a rich ceiling decoration and a ceiling, full-length frieze from the second half of the 17th century. The ceiling is divided by wooden and stucco frames into panels forming a composition made up of five ovals: the middle and largest oval features an image of blessing Christ on canvas; the four extreme ones feature the busts of the four evangelists. The remaining panels are covered with colourful floral and geometric polychrome. The ceiling frieze, exposed in 1976, shows a painting of birds among acanthus leaves. The manor house is surrounded by the remnants of a former landscape park. Nearby, there are farm buildings of the former grange from the 18th/19th century, remodelled in the second half of the 20th century, and a chapel with the figure of St John of Nepomuk from the end of the 18th century.

The site is accessible; sightseeing by prior telephone arrangement.
