Hillfort - Zabytek.pl

Address
Łagów

Location
woj. lubuskie, pow. świebodziński, gm. Łagów

The hillfort belongs to well-preserved facilities originating from the Middle Ages and is an important contribution to becoming familiar with the earliest history of Łagów.

History of the structure

The hillfort in Łagów was established in the 13th century and functioned to the 14th century. Fragments of ceramic pottery and historic artefacts made of iron dating to that period were found in the area. Moreover, traces of the Lusatian culture settlement from the Hallstatt period were found on the site (fractions of clay pottery).

Site description

Location of the heritage site. The site is located in a forest area, on a natural hill, to the south of the Trześniowskie Lake, approx. 300 m to the west of the former cemetery and to the north-west of Łagów.

Site description. The hillfort in Łagów is a two-component feature of a highland type, with well-preserved ramparts and moat. The site and its surroundings are overgrown with a beech forest, managed by the State Forests. The area belongs to the Łagowski Landscape Park. A lake is located in the immediate vicinity of the hillfort.

Progress and findings of archaeological fieldwork activities. A probing survey was carried out in the hillfort in 1963. As a result thereof, a certain amount of fragments of clay pottery and iron artefacts originating from the 13th/14th century were found. The site was also penetrated during surface surveys carried out in 1988 as part of the Archaeological Picture of Poland initiative. However, only 4 fragments of the pottery from Hallstatt period of the Lusatian culture were collected. No materials dating from the Middle Ages were found.

Visitor access. The hillfort is accessible all year round. It can be reached by a tourist route running to the hillfort and to the Trześniowskie Lake from the developed area.
