The church in Kosieczyn is a unique and the most valuable monument in cultural terms among a group of wooden churches, not only in the Lubuskie Voivodeship.

History

The church was built probably in 1389 or - more certainly - at the turn of the 14th and 15th century. The church was consecrated in 1408. For a short time, around 1603, it was used by the Protestants. Over centuries the structure was subject to numerous transformations and renovations. In the 19th century and in the early 20th century the arrangement of window openings was changed, new windows and an entrance from the southern side were introduced. Construction date of the sacristy with a frame structure on the extension of the corpus is unknown. Earlier, the sacristy had been located at the southern wall of the presbytery. Facades were weatherboarded in the 20th century.

Description

The church is located in the centre of the village, by the main road, on a spacious square. It was erected on a rectangular floor plan with a slightly narrower presbytery and a sacristy on its extension in the east. A tower, arranged on a square plan, was erected as a frame structure in the western part of the nave. The nave and presbytery are covered with gable roofs, the sacristy with three-sloped roofs and the tower is crowned with a tented roof. The roofs are covered with wood shingles. All façades are covered with weatherboards. The interior, with a primarily exposed log structure that was later covered with plaster, is currently covered with contemporary panelling. Historic fittings include a Gothic Pieta sculpture, a Renaissance pulpit and the main altar from the Baroque period.

Accessible historic building. Viewing of the church is only possible by prior telephone arrangement.
