As the remains of a fortified settlement established by the people of the West Baltic Barrow culture, the hill fort in Karniewo is a historic monument of great scientific value.

Location and description

The hill fort is located at the southern end of the village, approx. 70 m to the east of the road running from Karniewo to the south. It is situated on a moraine promontory that juts out into the formerly waterlogged valley of a stream flowing into the Łydynia river. The hill fort is sited on an oval hill with the dimensions of around 220 m by 85 m. The ramparts which were less than one metre in height as early as the 1960s have not peen preserved to the present day. The area of the site is currently used as pasture.

History

The site dates back to the Early Iron Age, the Hallstatt D period (mid-6th - 5th c. BC).

Condition and results of archaeological research

The site was known as early as the 1920s. Verifications of the site were carried out in 1957. Archeological surveys were conducted by Ludmiła Paderewska in 1966. The moat and the outer slope of the rampart, the foot of the rampart on the side of the maidan, which is the inner part of the hill fort, as well as the maidan were excavated as part of three archaeological excavations. It was found that the hill fort was defended by a moat which measured 6 m in width and 1.4 m in depth. Its bank on the side of the rampart was formed in the shape of a step fortified with stones. The rampart was built of stone and clay. According to researchers, a large content of wood charcoal in the layer explored could be considered as proof of the probably presence of wooden elements in the structure of the rampart. Excavations of its foot, on the inside, have uncovered a sunken structure with a large amount of wood charcoal and lumps of pugging in the fill. It is possible that these were relics of buildings. Excavations of the maidan revealed a cultural layer, which is a layer of soil dating back to the period of use of the fortified settlement.

The hill fort is located in the area of land being private property. It is easily visible from the asphalt road leading to Regimin and the unpaved road from Karniewo to the south.
