Example of the only viridarium by the cathedral preserved in Poland, unique in terms of its location on the northern side of the buildings, not - like it is usually in monastery complexes - on the southern side.

History

The construction of the cathedral in Kamień Pomorski was started after moving the diocese from Wolin after 1176 .

Until the end of the 15th century the works consisting in the erection and extention of the temple were under way. In the years 1310-1350 a Gothic viridarium was added to the northern side nave of the cathedral, ca. mid-14th century the garden was established there. Over the eastern wing of the cloister residential premises were arranged, later on transformed into the cathedral treasury. In the 18th century the cloister on the southern side of viridarium was demolished. After World War II under the supervision of Gerard Ciołek maintenance and conservation works of the viridarium were carried out - a 12th century baptismal font was placed in the centre, pursuant to the tradition coming from the church erected in Kamień during christianising mission of St. Otto of Bamberg in 1124.

Description

Viridarium is built on on a floor plan approximating the shape of a square, surrounded from three sides by Gothic cloisters with arcades. The arrangement of paths crossing at a right angle divides the garden area into four regular quarters. Central part is accentuated with a Romanesque baptismal font. The specimens growing here include:Thuja plicata 150 cm in circumference, Quercus robur 400 cm in circumference, Ilex aquifolium 60 cm in circumference -mentioned as the oldest specimens in Poland. The northern wall of the cathedral is overgrown with Hedera helix. The paths of the viridarium are covered with ceramic brick.

Limited access to the historic building. Admission charge.
