The church complex represents an example of an ecclesiastical building located in a small village, of a local significance.

However, it deserves attention due to the period in which it was built and the care for its good state of preservation. The authentic church surroundings (a church graveyard), although not covered with a conservation policy, and preserved examples of tombstones as well as a brick shrine from the 19th century located next to the bell tower are also worth noting.

History

The parish in Jasionna was established around 1400. The initial wooden church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary was mentioned in 1443. The current church dates back to the second half of the 17th century. In the mid-18th century and in the years 1865-1876 it was subject to renovation (the choir gallery was remodelled and a porch was added on the axis of the nave). In 1882 the church obtained new polychrome. In 1883 a vestibule was added to the sacristy. In the 20th century (1902, 1930, 1978) the church interior was subject to renovation works, plus a porch and a steeple were added. Due to its bad technical condition, the church underwent major refurbishment in the years 1986-1989, according to the design by Józef Jamroz and Leon Obtułowicz from Cracow, at the efforts of Rev. Zdzisław Wołos. The church was completely pulled down, the damaged structural elements were replaced and the whole structure was reinstalled on a new foundation. It was then that a system of heat pumps drawing energy from the ground was installed for the first time ever in Poland to heat the interior.

Unfortunately, a bell tower accompanying the church, originating from the 19th century, is currently in a very bad condition and has yet to be renovated. However, in 1989 a new bell tower was erected next to the old one (on a tall foundation). It slightly resembles the original one owing to the façade partitioning.

Description

The church is not oriented towards the east (the chancel faces the north). It is located on the east side of the road running across the village. Its gable faces the road. It is surrounded by a fence made of fieldstones. The plot adjacent to the church is covered with trees.

The temple is made of wood and was erected on a new, brick foundation, in a log structure reinforced with vertical supports, covered with weatherboards on both sides. Each part of the church is covered with a separate roof clad in copper sheet. The nave, the chancel and the porch are covered with a gable roof, while the annexes are topped with shed roofs with small eaves. The ridge is surmounted by a slender steeple crowned with an onion-shaped cupola with a crucifix. The roof truss features a king-post structure. The three-nave interior is partitioned by two pairs of pilasters. The rectangular nave with an adjoining narrower chancel terminating in a straight arch, features a sacristy adjoining it on the west side and featuring a small porch. A porch and two small storage rooms were added to the front. The interior floors are made of ceramic tiles with a floor heating system. The interior is covered with a flat and barrel vault, while the side naves feature a faux barrel vault. The choir gallery is supported by four posts with a protruding middle part. The rood beam features Baroque sculptures of Christ and Holy Mother with St John. The main altar from the 18th century with the figures of St Simeon and Joseph and a painting of Our Lady of Jasionna (Scapular). Baroque side altars from the 18th century with paintings “Transfiguration of Christ” and “Saint Joseph”. A pulpit with representations of the saints was also made in the 18th century.

A bell tower, included in the register of historic monuments, is located to the south-east from the church. It was erected on a square floor plan, in a post-and-beam structure (with a middle post centrally supporting the roof), with vertical board-and-batten cladding on the outside. The upper floor of each façade has five bell windows shielded by wooden shutters. The entire structure is covered with a tented roof clad in wood shingles, with a centrally located metal crucifix.

The building is accessible to visitors during masses and following previous arrangements with the parish priest.
