Address
Grodzisko
Location
woj. warmińsko-mazurskie, pow. gołdapski, gm. Banie Mazurskie
The structure forms a clear dominant feature in the surrounding landscape, at the bottom of which stretches the historic village of Grodzisko.
Location and description
The hill fort is located on the western edge of the village where the roads to Dąbrówka Polska and Banie Mazurskie split. The structure was erected on a high moraine hill which dominates over the surrounding landscape. A promontory hillfort with no outer ramparts. It features an oval shape with the dimensions of 100 metres on the N-S axis and 80 metres on the W-E axis. The steep hillsides of the moraine hill, the height of which is 40 metres from the foot of the hill, contribute to the defensive value of the complex. The hillsides rise much more gently in the northern and the north-western parts of the hill; for the above reason, an earthen defensive rampart was erected there, about 2 metres wide and approximately 1.7 metres tall when measured from the courtyard side. The area of the hillfort was partially destroyed during World War II, when trenches and fortifications were constructed there. Currently, the major part of the structure is overgrown with tall grass, and a few trees. A thick growth of trees and shrubs is only present on the side of the structure which lies closer to the village, making it difficult to access the site from that direction.
History
Three phases of the functioning of the defensive complex in the Grodzisko village have been identified:
I - the period of Roman influence;
II - the period of the early Middle Ages;
III - the period of the Middle Ages
First mentions of the structure are found in 16-th century literature.
Condition and results of archaeological research
The first, amateur research was carried out in the 19th century. It was only in 1970 and then in years 1974-75 that the first archaeological research programme (including verification activities and surveys) was carried out under the supervision of the the Voivodeship Historical Monument Preservation Officer in Białystok.
Due to its location, the hill fort is clearly visible from the road leading to the village. The historical artifacts unearthed during archaeological works are currently kept in Suwałki.
