residential building Grodków

Location

The administrative and residential building is a remnant of the former industrial mill complex in Grodków.

Together with the preserved granary building, it is one of the oldest elements of the old buildings. The building has retained its original mass, composition and architectural details, thus being a testimony to the old industrial tradition of the city.

History of the structure

The industrial complex of the former mill consisted of two spatially related parts with different functions. The first was a residential section, which included both offices, living quarters, and a grain and flour warehouse; the second was a production section, which was arranged on the south side of the development. The building in question was erected in the second half of the 19th century. The building remained in active use until the year 2000. Soon after the activity ceased, some of the production buildings that served as auxiliary functions and were in danger of collapse were demolished. These were unstylish buildings with degraded or low architectural value, with many build-ups as a result of alterations and transformations due to technological development. The preserved fragment of the complex currently remains unused.

Description of the structure

Administrative and residential building located in the former industrial mill complex, in the southern part of Grodków, not far from the old town, between the exit roads to Nysa and Niemodlin. It was situated in the northern part of the plot, next to one of the side entrance gates leading to the area of the former factory. The entire complex was surrounded by a brick wall. The building was set on a U-shaped plan with a small inner courtyard. On the south side, a former granary is adjacent to the side wall of the building. It is a brick, plastered, two-story object with a usable and residential attic and a basement in the eastern part. It was covered with a mansard roof with small attic rooms and dormers. The body of the building is distinguished by the asymmetrical eastern elevation, which is accented by differently shaped avant-corps. The first of them, located at the junction with the granary building, is set on a quarter circle plan. Its axes are marked by window openings flanked by semi-columns at the level of the second story. A decorative panel with garlands is placed between the window levels. Next to it, in the central part of the façade, there is a simple two-axial avant-corps. The windows situated here are framed with pilasters and the level between the storeys is outlined with decorative panels. Another semi-circular protrusion in the north-eastern corner has an analogous composition. Above it, in the slope of the roof, a raised wall of a semi-circular tower with three small windows, covered with a domed roof with a pinnacle. The northern, multi-axial elevation has a modest architectural decoration. What attracts attention here is the pseudo-avant-corps topped with a gable with a half-hip roof and a firewall in the roof slope in the form of a neo-baroque gable. In the western (front) elevation, facing Sienkiewicza Street, the second axis is marked by the main entrance. The attic is characterized by a dense pattern of windows, and eyelid dormers appear in the roof slope.
