At the end of 1940, the German occupier relocated all Jews from Popów Kościelne to the ghetto in Maków Mazowiecki. At least 133 of them, that is, practically all of them, died in the Holocaust.
The Jewish cemetery in Popowo Kościelne was built at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. In 1781, the inspector of the Płock diocese recorded that the local Jews buried their dead in Radzymin. Therefore, the necropolis must have been established after that time, and certainly before 1820, when it was first recorded.
The Description
The cemetery was established on a small hill, at Malownicza 67, approx. 100 metres behind the Roman Catholic cemetery, on the plot no. 459. During the Second World War and after 1945, the necropolis was destroyed. In 2009, on the initiative of the local parish priest, clean-up works were carried out in the area.
Nowadays, approximately 15 tombstones and their fragments have been preserved in the Jewish cemetery in Popowo Kościelne, mostly made of simple granite stones, with inscriptions in Hebrew. The oldest matzeva dates back to 1825. An earthen trench is visible around the area, probably constituting the former boundary of the cemetery.
