Manor house

manor house 1790-1795 Wiechlice

Address
Wiechlice, 52

Location
woj. lubuskie, pow. żagański, gm. Szprotawa - obszar wiejski

The construction of the manor house in the years 1790-1795 was initiated by Georg Siegmund Neumann.

The residence with former utility buildings is located in the middle of the village, next to a landscape park. The Classicist manor house represents a distinctive type of residential architecture of the Lower Silesia.

History

The property in Wiechlice was bought in 1786 by Georg Siegmund Neumann, who was responsible for the construction of the current manor complex. The Classicist manor house was erected in the years 1790-1795. A landscape park, where oaks and limes prevail, was arranged alongside with the construction of the manor house. Near the manor house, on the east side of the plot, there is a utility yard where farm buildings were erected in the late 18th and early 19th century. In 1855 a gardener’s house was built in the park, according to the design by Thomas. Around 1890 the facility was extended at the garden-facing end by an avant-corps with a staircase, while a portico was added to the front (east) façade. The residence belonged to the Neumann family until the end of World War II. Once the war came to an end, the manor house and farm buildings were taken over by the local State Agricultural Holding (PGR). The rooms of the manor house hosted offices and apartments of the PGR employees. In the 1970s the manor house was abandoned and started falling into disrepair.  In 2007 the manor house, together with farm buildings, was bought by a private owner, who renovated the feature and adapted it to serve as a hotel and a conference centre.

Description

The Classicist manor house is located in the centre of the village, at a local road leading from Szprotawa to Niegosławice. The manor house is situated on the edge of the landscape park and its front façade faces the utility yard with farm buildings. An oval porte-cochère leads to the manor house. The manor house is made of brick, has two storeys, was set on a rectangular floor plan measuring 15 x 30 m and is covered with a mansard roof with pediments.  A quadrangular avant-corps on the west side, covered with a gable roof, features undulating gables in the Baroque Revival style. The portico on the east façade is formed by Renaissance Revival columns supporting the balcony. The façades are pierced by rectangular windows of different sizes, framed by surrounds. The central part of the front façade and the corners are adorned with pilasters. The interiors of some rooms of the manor house are accentuated with elements of the Classicist and eclectic stucco décor. The renovation of the manor house has contributed to restoring the past glory of this valuable historic building.

The manor house is a monument owned privately. Today, the site serves as a hotel. The building is open to the public.
