An example of a Baroque temple erected in a frame structure, with partially preserved fixtures and fittings.

History of the structure

The earliest known mention of Lubięcin, dating back to 1372, concerns the local parish. At that time, a wooden church was found in the village. Most probably, it burned down during the Thirty Years’ War. In its place, on a hill, in the early 18th century, a new stone-and-brick temple was erected. Independently thereof, in the central part of the village, an Evangelical church was built in the years 1742-1747 at the initiative of the ducal family of Pignatelli (currently the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus). Originally, the wattle-and-daub building did not feature a ridge turret. It was added in 1862. Around 1930 the temple underwent renovation. After World War II the church was taken over by the Catholics and consecrated already in 1945. In 1960 the arcades in the eastern part and brick floor tiles were removed. During the renovations carried out in the 1980s the façades were renovated, a false vault was installed, window and door joinery was replaced and the interior was clad in wood panelling. Before 1990 some window openings were bricked up.

Site description

The church is located at the heart of the village, at the fork of the roads to Nowa Sól, Konotop and Sława. A single-storey clergy house is found in the south-eastern part of the church square, dating back to the first half of the 19th century. A Baroque temple was erected in a timber-framed, aisleless structure. It was set on a floor plan resemblant of an elongated rectangle with bevelled corners, with a sacristy adjoining on the east side, a porch on the west side and two annexes placed symmetrically on the axis of the longer sides. The main block is covered with a multi-hipped roof, the single-storey sacristy – with a three-pitched roof, while the projections – with gable roofs. An octagonal ridge turret with a lantern is located centrally in the roof ridge (1862). The façades are accentuated by a regular arrangement of pillars, transoms and braces as well as two levels of windows terminating in segmental arches. The interior is covered with a false barrel vault. Along the walls, the gallery is supported by eight pillars and two columns with composite capitals. The preserved fixtures and fittings include a Late Baroque altarpiece from the 2nd half of the 18th century, a pipe organ casing from the turn of the 19th century and stained glass windows from 1907.

Visitor access. Limited access to the building. Viewing of the church interior is possible by prior telephone arrangement.
