History of the site

The church was built in the fourth quarter of the 13th century. In the period between 1540-1668 it remained in the hands of the Evangelicals. Subsequent guardians of the temple were the Jesuits and the Augustinians, who administered the feature until the dissolution of the order in 1810.  In the first half of the 14th century a tower was added on the west side, while in the 16th century vaults were installed in the nave and the chancel. At the same time old window openings were walled up and the new ones were cut. In the 18th century the windows were enlarged and a porch was added. Around 1900 the temple regained its Gothic features. After World War II, in the years 1975-1976, renovation works were carried out.

Description of the site

The church is located in the centre of the village, at an intersection of the main roads. The church area is surrounded by a stone wall from the 16th century, featuring wickets from the 18th century. There is a tomb chapel of the Tomaszewski family from 1746 at the graveyard wall on the east side. The temple is oriented towards the east and made of stone. The two-nave, three-bay main body is covered with a lierne vault resting on two octagonal pillars. The rectangular chancel features a vaulted ceiling of the groin type. Next to it, on the north side, there is a sacristy, while on the south side there is a porch covered with a ribbed groin vault. A buttressed tower, erected on a rectangular floor plan, is located on the west side. Gable roofs feature Gothic Revival gables. The façades include original windows with pointed-arch patterns. The underside of the rood arch includes a polychrome presenting St George from the 2nd half of the 15th century.  The most valuable elements of the fixtures and fittings include: a Late Gothic triptych presenting Madonna with Child and the saints, Late Baroque side altars from 1749-1750 (1751?), a stone church tabernacle from 1497 and a wooden Mannerist baptismal font from around 1600. The façades feature stone epitaph plaques from the 16th-17th century, commemorating, among others, members of the von Knobelsdorff family.
