Domaszowice, shrine, 19th century, Our Lady of Piekary

History of the structure

The shrine was erected in 1883 from the foundation of J. Gliniorsz, as evidenced by the inscription plaque inside the shrine. Inside there is a painting of Our Lady of Piekary from the 2nd half of the 19th century, 67x53 cm, entered in the registry of movable monuments of the Opolskie Voivodeship under number 50/R/2016 of 6 September 2016. The painting is an example of a reproduction made in the oleography technique.

In 2014 the shrine was entered into the register of historic monuments of the Opolskie Voivodeship. Thanks to the initiative of the Domaszowice Municipality, in 2018 the shrine underwent conservation works that preserved its historic values and improved its state of preservation, since the monument was already very dilapidated and falling into ruin. The restoration work was carried out in 2018 based on the permission of the Opole Voivodeship Monument Protection Officer (OWKZ) No. 225/2014 dated 20 October 2014 and No. 1051/N/2017 dated 18 December 2017. The shrine underwent a major renovation. The construction and conservation works consisted of: insulating the foundations with a vertical diaphragm, replacing the rotten interior plaster, conserving the walls, pointing, supplementing the bricks and details, integrating the colours, replacing the carpentry - the secondary windows with the original, restored shutters and renovating the doors. Inside the shrine, the wooden structure of ceilings and roof trusses was renovated, and the wood was impregnated. The formwork and roofing were also replaced with copper sheeting, the crowning cross was restored, as well as other metal elements. Importantly, a stratigraphic study was performed prior to the restoration work to determine the mortar layout and colour scheme. The colour scheme of the interior of the shrine was realized according to the guidelines of the OWKZ. Special emphasis was placed on the restoration of the brick elevation. Secondary cement-lime joints were removed, the entire elevation surface was cleaned, cracked bricks were glued together, and damaged bricks were replaced. The stepped and cubic frieze, as well as the window and door woodwork were renovated. The monument was integrated by colour. Preventive decontamination of the elevation was also performed. As a result of conservation works undertaken and the enormous commitment of the Domaszowice Municipality, it was possible to restore the former splendour. As a result of conservation works undertaken, the monument has become a tourist attraction and a landmark of the village. The shrine was erected in 1883 as a votive offering of one of the village inhabitants.

Description of the structure

The wayside shrine is picturesquely located at the intersection of Polna and

Strzelecka Streets in the village of Domaszowice (plot no. 294/1). It is made of brick on a square floor plan. The object is two-storied, in the second story it turns into an octagonal tower topped with a pyramidal roof, broken at the base, covered with sheet metal. To the east is a rectangular, one-story vestibule with a gabled roof and triangular gable, topped with pinnacles. The corners of the lower storey and the vestibule are buttressed. The vestibule slopes into pinnacles that are crowned by metal crosses. The side walls of the lower storey have a pair of windows. In the lower turret zone - one window each on the north and south sides, in the upper zone a window in each wall. The entrance opening is closed with a gentle arch. The exterior doors are double doors. There is a dentil frieze below the cornice crowning the lower story and a cubic frieze below the edge of the cupola, distinguished by the darker colour of the brick. In the vestibule, a double-leaf wooden glazed door with fanlights was installed. The interior is covered with a segmental vault. A foundation plaque with the inscription is embedded in one of the walls: J. Gliniorsz/Erbaut/1883.
