A windmill, erected in 1705, represents a valuable example of the traditional folk architecture.

History of the structure

In 1791 the following features were found in the village of Lubięcin, belonging to the von Schoenaich family of Siedlisko: a manor house, a school, two churches, two clergy houses, two manor farms, two taverns and two windmills. 416 persons lived in the village at that time. The windmill, located on the eastern side of the road to Konotop, was erected in 1705 (as confirmed by the date on the horizontal beam). In the 19th century it was subject to renovation several times. Signatures placed on different structural components that confirmed the renovations carried out in 1867, 1884, 1879 and 1897 have survived. At that time the windmill belonged to the Riedel family and remained in their hands until the end of World War II. In 1945 it was taken over by the State Treasury. During a renovation in 1974 the weatherboarding of the walls, the roof cladding, the stairs, the porch and the wings were replaced with new ones. Similar works were performed during a subsequent renovation carried out in 1988. Since 1989 the windmill has remained in private hands.

Site description

The windmill is situated on a small hill in the northern part of the village, on the eastern side of a road towards Konotop. A building, set on a square floor plan, with a compact, two-storey silhouette, is covered with a gable roof with a pediment. Its base, a trestle, is formed by a vertical axis embedded on four crossed bales. The walls, erected in a timber frame structure, are covered with vertically laid weatherboards. One of the walls on the first floor features an entrance preceded by a porch and wooden, single-flight stairs. Elements of the propelling and transmission mechanism have survived, among others, wings mounted to a head of the drive shaft.

Visitor access. Limited access to the historic building. Private property – the building can only be viewed from the outside.
