History of the site

The village of Karczówka was first mentioned in the second half of the 13th century. In the years 1332-1810 it belonged to the Augustinian abbey of Żagań. The church was erected in 1679 in place of a Gothic temple, redesigned in the years 1691-1698 at the initiative of abbot Adalbert Andreas Thiel.

Description of the site

The church is situated more or less in the middle of the village, at the main road. The Baroque building is made of brick, has a single nave and a short chancel terminating in a semi-hexagon and facing the north, with a sacristy adjoining it at the west end and a porch adjacent to the east wall of the nave. The nave is covered with a gable roof with a steeple in the ridge, topped with a bulbous dome with a lantern. The chancel is topped with a multi-hipped roof, the sacristy is surmounted with a mono-pitched roof, while the porch is covered with a gable roof. The interior features a barrel vault, while the nave includes a pair of lunettes. The façades are pierced by windows with semi-circular termination, accentuated by rustication at the corners and crowned with a cornice. The gables of the nave and porch façades feature a volute-shaped profile and are adorned with pilasters. The west façade features a coat of arms of the Augustinians with an inscribed date 1698. The surviving fittings include the main altar with a Gothic Revival pieta.
