The palace in Drezdenko is an interesting example of the Baroque residential architecture located in the area of a former fortress.

History:

The palace was erected in 1766 at the initiative of a merchant from Poznan, Johann Georg Treppmacher. It was founded in the area of a former courtyard of the Drezdenko fortress, established in the years 1603-1605 and demolished in 1765 after it had suffered destruction during the Sever Years’ War. In 1798, after Treppmacher’s death, the palace was auctioned off. The residence hosted princes and monarchs as well as prominent statesmen. In the 19th century and in the early 20th century the building was subject to redevelopments and modernisations, mainly including modifications of the layout of rooms and the interior décor. Before 1939 the palace hosted a seat of the directorate of roads as well as tenancy apartments. After the war it was used as a social housing building and in 1958 it was adapted to serve as a primary school. Today, it as a seat of Gymnasium no. 1.

Description:

The palace is located in the eastern part of the town, in the former Twierdzy Square, currently Wolności Square. It closes the terminating vista stretching from the Old Town Market through the New Town Market to Twierdzy Square. It constitutes the main element of the development complex, comprising two single-storey outbuildings and a guardhouse. The complex is linked to the fortress bastion’s earthen structure by means of a hardened road. There is a small park with a lime alley in front of the palace. The palace was built of stone and bricks in the Baroque style, on an elongated rectangular floor plan, with a faux avant-corps in the front façade (west) and annexes on the north, east and south sides. It features a basement underneath parts of its structure and has two storeys covered with a tall hip roof, the west side of which features wall dormers. The annexes are covered with a mansard roof (on the north-east side), a gable roof and a shed roof. The façades are plastered and accentuated with a rhythm of symmetrical window axes and architectural details in the form of a strip including rose windows between the storeys (on the front façade), a profiled crowning cornice and window casings. The central axis of the front façade is accentuated with a faux avant-corps, which features the main entrance in a separate niche, framed on the sides by pilasters supporting the entablature, above which there is a balcony with a wrought balustrade adorned with a cartouche and initials of the owner - J.G. Treppmacher. A representational pass-through hall, featuring a wooden, winder staircase with woodcarving decoration, has been preserved from the original interior layout. The basement rooms are covered with groin and barrel vaults. The basement under the south part of the building is a remnant of an earlier residential building, probably originating from the 17th century. Several rooms on the ground floor are surmounted with groin vaults and sail vaults with lunettes; the remaining rooms on the ground floor and the first floor are covered with beam ceilings. The hall includes preserved ceramic floor tiles and an original inscription plaque commemorating the construction of the palace, while other rooms include fireplaces, plasterwork and stucco cladding of walls in one of the rooms. The main entrance features the original door joinery with sumptuous woodcarving details.

The site is accessible to the general public. It can be visited by prior telephone arrangement.
