Jewish cemetery Magnuszew

Address
Magnuszew, Bohaterów Września

Location
voivodeship mazowieckie, county kozienicki, commune Magnuszew - miasto

The first Jews began to settle in Magnuszew after 1793. In 1827, the local Jewish community numbered 330 people. In 1860, a wooden synagogue was built in the town, and the community had a cheder, a mikvah and a cemetery under its management. Another synagogue and a brick mikvah were built in the 19th century. Magnuszew was one of the centers of Hasidism.

Before World War I, in 1913, there were 1,702 Jews living in the town. By 1921, this number had decreased to 731 people.

After the outbreak of World War II, Magnuszew came under German occupation. In 1941 or 1942, the Germans established a ghetto, located in the Paciejów district. They liquidated it in the fall of 1942. The imprisoned Jews were then taken by the occupiers to the ghetto in Kozienice and then to Treblinka German Nazi extermination camp.

The Description

The Jewish cemetery in Magnuszew was established at the end of the 18th century, at the current Bohaterów Września street, behind the Catholic parish cemetery and the destroyed Evangelical cemetery. It was vandalized during the German occupation and after the war. Currently, it is a forested wasteland with no tombstones preserved.
