The Jewish cemetery - Zabytek.pl

Address
Świerże

Location
voivodeship lubelskie, county chełmski, commune Dorohusk

Jews began to settle in Świerże around the mid-16th century. In 1565, 14 Jewish families were recorded in the town. In the mid-18th century, the local Jews formed an organised community which also had jurisdiction over the Jewish population of nearby villages. In 1769, 120 Jews lived in Świerże.

The so-called new Jewish cemetery was probably opened in the second half of the 19th century. It was located in the northern part of Świerże, in the so-called Piaski, at Młyńska Street (in the section between Jana Pawła II and Piaskowa streets). The cemetery was marked on the map issued by the Military Geographical Institute in 1931.

During World War II, the cemetery was destroyed by Germans. The devastation process continued after 1945. Currently, the cemetery is not fenced. It has an area of about 0.36 ha, and 12 fragments of matzevot have survived. Some of them bear still legible Hebrew inscriptions. The land belongs to the State Treasury.
