The Jewish Cemetery

Jewish cemetery Tuszyn

Address
Tuszyn, 3 maja

Location
woj. łódzkie, pow. łódzki wschodni, gm. Tuszyn - miasto

The Jewish settlement in Tuszyn began in the 17th century, and by the end of the 19th century, the Jewish community constituted 36% of the total population.

In the interwar period, its members made a living mainly thanks to the healing baths enthusiasts, who came to town in great numbersfrom all over Poland, after a modern tuberculosis sanatorium was established in the nearby Tuszynek.  The German occupation of Tuszyn started in September 1939, and with it, the Naziterror against the Jews. All were forced to march to the ghetto

in Piotrków Trybunalski, and then taken to the Treblinka Extermination Camp.

It is difficult to determine when the Jewish cemetery in Tuszyn was established; most probably, it had already existed in the early 19th century. The western border of the cemetery is marked by an embankment, overgrown with old oak trees. The necropolis was destroyed during the German occupation, and the devastation was completed during the communist era. In the 1950s, a militia holiday centre was built on the cemetery grounds. Currently, the destroyed cemetery is the property of the Jewish Community in Łódź, and the relics of the tombstones can probably be located in different parts of the city.

In 2020, the cemetery was marked as part of the project, “Marking of Jewish cemeteries in the Republic of Poland” launched by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage. It was made possible thanks to a teacher from the Primary School No 1 in Tuszyn, Robert Kobylarczyk, who initiated the restoration of the cemetery.
