History
The theatre was erected in 1890, based on the design produced by Adolf Schimmelpfennig. It was designed as a wooden structure with six galleries, capable of accommodating 240 members of the audience at once. It was subsequently extended in 1901, when a pair of galleries and a balcony were added, while the brick section containing the stage and the backstage facilities was extended. The Ciechocinek theatre has served as the venue for many guest performances by eminent actors and performers, mostly from Warsaw (including Juliusz Osterwa, Stefan Jaracz, Mieczysław Fogg, Wiktoria Kawecka, Mira Zimińska). In 1969, the theatre faced closure due to poor technical condition. It was reopened in 1998, following a series of renovation works.
Description
The building consists of two sections: the wooden auditorium and the adjoining brick section containing the stage and the backstage facilities. The single-storey auditorium was designed on a square floor plan, with a porch preceding the main (western) entrance and covered walkways adjoining the side walls. The roof truss is of the rafter and collar type. The multi-faceted roof is covered with sheet metal. The auditorium is taller than the rest of the structure and features a tented roof. The eastern side of the main body of the theatre is adjoined by a two-storey backstage section, lower than the auditorium, as well as by single-storey annexes positioned on the northern and southern side. The older section of the theatre (the auditorium) features lavishly designed fretwork decorations.
The site is open to visitors.
