History

The palace was erected in 1793 upon order by Duke Peter Biron for his wife, Duchess Anne Charlotte Dorothea neé Medem. The building design was prepared by Christian V. Schultze, while the interiors were designed by Luigi Remondini. After the death of the Duchess in 1821, an office of ducal land estate functioned in the palace. During World War II the building suffered partial damage. In 1959 a full-scale renovation was carried out, in 1997 - renovation of interiors and in 2014 - renovation of the façades and of the roof, plus replacement of window and door joinery. Today, the building serves as the Municipal Council in Żagań.

Description

The palace is located in the north-eastern corner of Słowiański Square. It is a two-storey, Late Baroque building with Classicist elements, made of brick and designed on a horseshoe floor plan, with rear wings and piano nobile, covered with a mansard roof. On the axis of the front façade there is a three-storey avant-corps with a balcony portal on the ground floor; above, four pilasters in the giant order support the triangular tympanum. The façades are sumptuously decorated with relief panels, window pediments, a meandering frieze, a cornice and rustication. Inside, groin and barrel vaults with lunettes have been preserved on the ground floor.

Access to the site is limited.
