Address
Włodzienin

Location

The medieval hillfort in Włodzienin (site 2) is a valuable archaeological find with preserved field form.

In the close vicinity of the find, there are three other defensive structures - hillforts, this Jędrychowice-Włodzienin complex located on the Troja River is unique in the country.

History of the structure

The hillfort in Włodzienin (site 2) dates to the early and late Middle Ages, and is believed to be the so-called motte-and-bailey castle. Such structures are usually dated to the 13th-15th centuries. However, it must be said that the presented structure is quite enigmatic.

Description of the structure

The hillfort in Włodzienin (site 2) is located south of the village, about 90 m west of the Włodzienin - Dzbańce road. The relics are located on the high flood terrace of the Troja River, in the vicinity of a grove, wasteland, and arable fields, and in the vicinity of a second hillfort with church ruins and an old cemetery.

The hillfort is oval in plan and its plateau measures approximately 90 by 60 m. In the centre of the site there may be barely visible, heavily damaged relics of the mound, characteristic of the so-called motte-and-bailey castles. The structure covers an area of around 0.5 ha in total.

In 1970, the site was surveyed by Michał Parczewski. Three small excavations with a total area of 10 m² were carried out. Cultural layers and a few movable artefacts (45 fragments of pottery, 1 bone awl and 1 fragment of an iron object as well as brick fragments and clods of pugging material) were recorded. The historical material allowed only a general dating of the monument to the early and late Middle Ages.

Visitor access. The site is accessible all year round.
