The Baroque church in Wierzbica Górna represents the group of rural Protestant churches from the Opole Silesia region, built using the timber frame technique.

Until the end of the 17th century, nearly all churches in the northern part of the region were erected using the wattle-and-daub technique. The majority of churches of that type came into being in the first half of the 18th century. Until 1971, only sixteen of them remained.

History

There was a small wooden Catholic church in Wierzbica Górna before 1592, when Evangelical pastor Matthaeus Pfellius took over the church for the needs of his community. In 1718, at the initiative of pastor Thomas Maciewski, the earlier church, which was too small, was dismantled, and in the years 1719-1722 the present timber-frame church was built. The construction was founded by the owner of Wierzbica Górna - Joachim Wenzl von Neffe und Obsichau from nearby Kowalowice. During the next years, the parish was financed by the subsequent owners of the village. In 1930, pastor Gustav Weigelt ordered to replace the damaged Baroque tented roof of the tower with a pyramid roof. In the years 1937-1939, after numerous alarming reports of the then monument protection services, a full-scale renovation of the church was started, owing to the funds of the von Reiswitz family, among other things. The works were carried out under the direction of master builder Runkel of Wołczyn. During the 1920s, 4 Evangelical schools were operating within the parish. During World War II, the parish house was used by German soldiers as a place of accommodation. After 1945, the church became a filial church of the Roman-Catholic parish in Włochy. In 1970-1971, the tower and the roof of the church nave were renovated.

Description

The church is located in the northern part of the village, by the road leading from Namysłów to Kluczbork. It is circumscribed by a wooden fence with wicked gates from the north and the south. In 1920, a brick belfry was built in front of the southern façade.

The church is oriented and it was built using the wattle-and-daub technique on a Latin cross floor plan, with a quadrangular tower from the west. The chancel, which is not separated from the church body, is terminated semi-hexagonally and covered, together with the nave, with a common gable roof, higher than the roof of the transept, which is also of a gable type. By the southern wall of the body, there are four rectangular annexes used as chapels (covered with shed roofs) and a sacristy (from the north), topped with a two-sloped roof. The cuboidal, four-storey tower is topped with a tented roof.

The interior of the church is of single-nave type. It is topped with a false barrel vault, criss-crossing at the intersection with the transept. The wooden choir is connected with galleries running along the northern and the southern wall of the nave. The sacristy and the chapel by the chancel, and the two annexes in the western part, open towards the church’s interior with semi-circular arcades. Window and entrance openings have semi-circular top sections.

The church fittings and furniture come mainly from the 19th and the 20th century. Among the items worth particular attention, there is a Late Baroque main altarpiece (originally with an integrated pulpit), signed with the date 1729 and the name of the founder, Jan Lebnar.

In terms of its form, the church in Wierzbica is similar to the churches in Krasowice and Radomierowice.

The site is accessible to visitors.
