A brick inn from the 1st half of the 18th century, reconstructed in the 2nd half of the 19th century.

The feature has a regional value, and constitutes an example of the 18th-century urban development in Podlasie. It has been inscribed to the register of monuments as an example of Baroque urban development. The building has Late Baroque attributes.

History

The feature was built in the first half of the 18th century. At first, it served as an inn with a large yard in the back. In the second half of the 19th century it was subject to alteration works. Around 1954 the passage hall on the building’s axis was walled up, thus forming a large window; a mansard roof was replaced with a gable roof and the house was partitioned into apartments. Since the 1960s the building was used for commercial and service purposes.

Description

The former inn is located on the south frontage of the market square in Węgrów (formerly Rynek 1), in the south-eastern corner, on the corner of Strażacka Street. Its side-gabled pediment faces the market square.

The feature is made of brick laid on limestone mortar, plastered, covered with sheet metal. A basement extends under the entire building (except for the space under the passage hall). The basement is made of brick and has barrel vaults. The ceilings are made of wood. The roof truss is made of wood and has a rafter structure with two queen-posts. Erected on a rectangular floor plan with a small rectangular component part projecting slightly off the face of the southern gable wall. The building is one-storey with a usable loft, and is covered with a gable roof. The main corpus axis is accentuated by a two-storey faux avant-corps along the axis, crowned with a triangular pediment. All walls of the building rest on a low plinth, crowned with a considerably protruding cornice. The front façade has thirteen axes and a faux avant-corps slightly projecting off the face, formerly housing a gateway; currently the entrance is located on the ground floor; the upper storey has three windows. The (eastern) gable façade has three axes. The (southern) rear façade has thirteen axes and includes a window in the second storey of the faux avant-corps. The window and door openings on all storeys are rectangular and have profiled frames. Windows in faux avant-corps in the front and rear façade terminate in a segmental arch; they were formerly the openings of a gateway. There is a two-bay building with a corridor (formerly a passage hall) along the axis. Rooms of both suites are accessible through the hall, available through entrances from the Market Square, symmetrically arranged along the main axis. The rear suite in the west includes wooden stairs leading to the attic. Floors are made of boards, walls and ceilings are plastered, rooms are equipped with tile ovens.

The inn in Węgrów at Rynek 14 is available for visitors throughout the year, on working days and hours of shops located in the building.
