A Gothic church with interior converted in the 17th century.

History

The church in Warta was built somewhere around the year 1340. It replaced an older, wooden building which has burned down during the invasion of the Teutonic Order in 1331. In the 17th century, as a result of a fire, the church was had to undergo substantial modifications, including the lowering of the walls and the modification of the interiors. In the early 20th century, the tower was extended upwards.

Description

The parish church is located in the centre of Warta, near the south-western corner of the market square. It is surrounded by a brick fence. The church is oriented.

It features a three-nave layout, with a Gothic log structure; interiors after conversion in 17th century are Baroque in style.

It is made of brick, the walls are buttressed, and external façades are without plasterwork. It has the form of a pseudo-basilica with three naves and a chancel with a triangular end section. The four-bay body passes into a narrower two-bay chancel. Side naves open towards the main nave with arcaded openings supported on four-side piers. From the north, the main body of the church is adjoined by a quadrangular tower, and the chancel - by a sacristy. The vaults are of barrel type with lunettes, and in side naves - of double barrel type. The building is covered with gable roofs, and the truss is made of wood. Architectural detail of the façades of the church is modest. Among elements worth attention one should mention Gothic portals from hand-made brick, and blind windows in the chancel section and in the gable of the western façade.

The most valuable artefact in the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary from Warta. It is a triptych coming from the early 16th century, made in the workshops of Greater Poland. It consists of the central painting (title scene), and two leafs with six panels painted on both sides (series of “Joy of Mary”, “Passion of Christ”), and a three-part predella (Virgin Mary with saints). For a long time, the work was located in the National Museum in Warsaw. Due to its poor state of preservation, in the years 1993-1998 it was subjected to a throughout conservation. After years of efforts, it returned to Warta and is exhibited in the church.

The site is available for visitors for the whole year, and the interior may be visited upon prior arrangement with the parish priest.
