An example of a fine town villa located in a seaside resort. Its lavish architectural form is an illustration of the French Renaissance Revival style popular in the second half of the 19th century.

History

The villa complex was built in the late 19th century for Conrad Westphal, an industrialist from Słupsk. It was situated in the seashore villa district, in the then Villen Str. (Villa street). Currently, the building hosts the Villa Red hotel.

Description

The complex is located in the row of buildings furthest to the north of the city, about 100 metres from the seashore. It is placed on a plot in the shape resembling a rectangle. Towards the west it borders with Żeromskiego street, towards the south with Chopina street, towards the east with a park, and towards the north with Limanowskiego street and the strip of seashore greenery running along the street.

The complex includes a villa, a stable, and a small park surrounding the buildings. The villa is situated in the north-western part of the plot and faces Żeromskiego street. The stable is located deep within the plot, near its eastern border. The property is enclosed by a fence from the times of construction.

Both buildings were erected in an eclectic style and have French neo-Renaissance features.

The villa was built on a square floor plan, with a tower on a round floor plan added from the east (used as a staircase), partly embedded into the interior of the building. The interior of the villa features a three-bay layout, with a corridor in the middle. The body of the villa is varied, with slender proportions. The two-storey building with a high basement is covered with two multi-pitched roofs of different heights, with one- or two-storey attic inside. The roofs have steeply lowering planes and round dormers. On the top, there is an observation deck surrounded by a decorative metal handrail. The tower has three storeys and is covered with a high octagonal roof. The main entrance to the building is situated in the western façade. It is preceded by spectacular stairs, projecting forward. A porch has been integrated between the eastern wall and the tower. In the northern façade, on the second storey level, there is a two-storey bay window.

The façades feature decorative elements, including lavish architectural detail and the contrast between the brick walls and the plastered elements: the tower, the bay window, and the architectural detail. The western (front) and the southern façades are symmetrical. In the northern and eastern façade, the symmetry was broken by the side location of the tower and the porch. The details of the façade include: rustication of the plinths and the corners, profiled cornices and sumptuous window surrounds in the form of casings, window sills, triangular gables, and foliate decorations.

The stable was erected on a rectangular floor plan. It is a one-storey building, with an elevated knee wall, covered with a three-sided roof. The architectural decoration is similar to the decoration used in the façades of the villa, yet slightly more modest. Additionally, the northern façade features sculptures of horse heads in tondi.

The site is open to visitors. The buildings houses the Villa Red hotel.
