The lighthouse is a distinctive element of the landscape of the seaside port town of Ustka. The structure, apart from its self-evident practical value, has also important symbolical meaning: it represents the age-long maritime traditions of the town.

Due to the optical equipment used in the lighthouse, the building is an important industrial monument that illustrates the development of lighthouses from the moment of the construction of the building until the present day. The architectural form of the building represents the austere style of lighthouses erected by Prussian engineers.

History

Ustka was a medieval fishing and port settlement. From the 14th century, the port in Ustka belonged to the town of Słupsk, and in 1831, it was taken over by Prussia. Initially, the role of a lighthouse was fulfilled by a church tower. In 1871, Ustka had a lantern with the Fresnel system. It was drawn up onto a mast by a pilot station. In 1892, a new pilot station with a lantern tower was built that has survived till the present day. The lantern emitted fixed red light with a range of 8 NM, 11.6 m above the sea level. In 1905, the tower was extended upwards and a lantern room was installed. Currently, the lighthouse is 22.2 metres tall above the sea level, measured to the light source on the tower, has a range of 18 NM, and emits white flashing light. In the first years after World War II the lighthouse was called Postomino, and since 1947, it has been called “Ustka”.

Description

The lighthouse is located at the outlet of a port canal, in the Pilot Wharf, at the base of the eastern breakwater. It is situated on a slight elevation. From the west, it neighbours the wharf of the port canal, from the north - a street and a seashore beach, and from the south and the east - town buildings.

The architectural form of the lighthouse is reminiscent of the neo-Gothic style. The facility is made of brick and not plastered. It is comprised of a two-wing main body of the pilot station and a lantern tower. The main body of the pilot station was built on a “L” shaped floor plan. The eastern wing of the main body has one storey, while the western wing has two storeys. Both wings are covered with separate gable roofs. The lantern tower was built on an octagonal floor plan, built into the south-western corner of the pilot station. The tower has four storeys and is topped with a rectangular lantern room crowned with a small conical roof. The façades of the whole building are neo-Gothic and subtle. The gable-end façades are crowned with pinnacle gables. The shaft of the tower features pointed-arch arcaded brick cornice. Door and window openings are vaulted with segmental or pointed arches. A staircase with concrete and metal spiral stairs is located inside the tower.

The building is accessible to visitors. The lighthouse may be visited in May, June and September from 10 am to 5 pm, and in July and August from 10 am to the sunset.
