Dr Jan Rode Park

park 20th century Tomaszów Mazowiecki

Address
Tomaszów Mazowiecki, Szkolna 14A

Location
woj. łódzkie, pow. tomaszowski, gm. Tomaszów Mazowiecki (gm. miejska)

An example of an urban park from the beginning of 20th century, with the preserved boundaries and compositional arrangement, which corresponds to the composition of the park in the Evangelical-Augsburg complex, situated opposite.

It has natural and recreational values.

History

The park was established between 1916 and 1923. In 1925, a monument was erected in the park to honour the memory of Doctor Jan Rode. Jan Rode was a physician and a social activist engaged in patriotic activities. He spent most of his life in Tomaszów Mazowiecki. He provided free-of-charge treatment for workers of the local factories. As a result of his efforts, a little hospital was set up. He was also involved in the establishment of the first secondary school in the town. In recognition of his work and achievements, it was decided that the little green area near the place where he lived would be named after him. The bust of Doctor Rode was designed by Antoni Poltkowski. During the Second World War, the monument was demolished by the occupiers. In the next stages of the war, the park served as a burial ground for soldiers of the Independent Sudeten Anti-Tank Artillery Brigade of the Second Polish Army. After the war, the remains were exhumed and transferred to a military cemetery. On the site of the graves a monument was erected to honour the memory of the dead soldiers. An anti-tank gun was placed next to the monument.

Description

The park borders with the streets: Św. Antoniego, Żwirki i Wigury, Polna and Szkolna. It occupies a two-hectare, square plot of land with no water reservoirs. Its north-south axis and its east-west axis run across the park area, shaped like a regular quadrangle. The walking paths have the shape of two partially overlapping circles. The statue of Doctor Rode is placed on the axis connecting the park with the church grounds, and so is the monument honouring the memory of the soldiers, positioned further south. The park is not fenced off, its borders are lines with trees: maples, oaks and black locusts. Apart from the entrances located in all corners, there are also two entrances from Św. Antoniego Street and one from Polna Street. The trees planted in the park include linden trees, spruces, pines, weeping willows and birches. Among the trees, there are flower beds, lawns and ornamental shrubs, including mock-orange bushes.

Accessible all year round
