Church of Saints Barbara and Stanislaus

church 1633 Szyk

Address
Szyk, 7

Location
woj. małopolskie, pow. limanowski, gm. Jodłownik

One of the most beautiful late Gothic churches in Małopolska, well preserved and abounding in finest works of art.

It boasts, among other things, the image of the Virgin Mary with Child attributed to Stanisław Samostrzelnik. The building is well visible and not obscured by high trees.

History

The parish church was built in 1633. Some building materials from a 16th-century temple were used for its construction (the parish had operated since the 14th century).  The church was consecrated in 1634. Renovated several times, for example, in 1751, in the second half of the 19th century and in the 1990s. In 2011 the church roofing, the façades, and joinery were renewed for public funds. Fire and anti-burglary systems were installed.

Description

A late Gothic wooden log church, oriented, boarded, and shingled. It consists of a nave and a narrower chancel closed on three sides; sacristy adjoining from the north. At the front of the nave, there is a pole and frame tower with a bell, covered by a tented roof. Ogee portals can be seen over the entrance from the tower to the nave and in the entrances in the tower sides. The chancel and the nave have a single-ridge roof with a Baroque ave bell spirelet. The roof is supported by a king post truss in the Gothic type. The interiors are covered by flat ceilings, with wooden casing in the nave. The rood arch is rectangular and profiled. The choir gallery is rested on two poles. Inside figurative and ornamental polychrome from the second half of the 19th century. In the chancel, sections of older paintings from the turn of the 16th century were uncovered with scenes from the life of St Stanislaus of Szczepanów and the scene of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. The main altar is late Baroque from the second half of the 18th century. In the middle, there is a late Gothic panel painting from the first half of the 16th century. It shows Madonna with Child in a radiant mandorla; above her, the Holy Trinity in the rare Pietas Domini type. This painting, one of the most interesting examples of Gothic and Renaissance painting in Małopolska, is the work of an anonymous painter named, Master of the Triptych of Szyk; he was active in the first half of the 16th century. Some researchers attribute the image to Stanisław Samostrzelnik, a Cistercian and artist from Szczyrzyc. This is most probably part of a Gothic triptych, just like the image of St Lawrence in the chancel. The Rococo side altars from the second half of the 18th century feature Baroque paintings: St Adalbert on the left in the middle plane, St Apollonia at the top, St Joseph on the right in the middle plane, and St Kinga at the top. A valuable item is a stone, Renaissance baptismal font from 1585 with the Półkozic coat of arms. Another noteworthy item in the interior is a pulpit from the second half of the 18th century. The premises of the church and the former church cemetery is enclosed by a stone fence with gates (ca. 1800). Next to the church, there is a wooden clergy house, organist’s house, and farm buildings from the turn of the 19th century.

The site is open to visitors. Services on weekdays: 6:30 a.m. Sundays and feasts: 8:00, 11:00 a.m., 3:00 p.m. It is open from 1 May through 30 September as part of the Wooden Architecture Route.
