The “Pod Dębem” [Under an Oak] building is one of the oldest and best-preserved Classicist features in Mazovia and showcases a high landscape and architectural value for the town and for the layout of the town market.

History

The “Pod Dębem” house was built in 1820 in the Classicist style, made of “Szydłowiec” sandstone and intended to serve as an elementary school. It was funded by Anna Sapieżyna nee Zamojska. After the war it was transformed into a primary school and later into a secondary school. In the 1970s it was adapted to serve as a hotel. The name “Pod Dębem” comes from the old, monumental oaks growing in the yard. The building has served many purposes in its life. During World War II, from 1940, the Jewish Council of Elders had its site there. Later it was used by the Germans as a weapon storage facility. In the 1970s the building belonged to a local municipal council that arranged “Pod Dębem” guest house in its interiors. At that time the building was renovated. In the late 1980s it lost its importance. For the last 20 years the building has remained unused. In the years 2011-2012 the existing building was renovated and modernised - without any modifications to the dimensions, shape and appearance.

Description

The building is made of bricks, plastered, single-storey, with a basement underneath parts of its structure, with a tall usable attic and clad with roof tiles. It was erected on a rectangular floor plan, with a pass-through vestibule on the axis. On each side of the vestibule it includes two bays of rooms. The building façade has a wide cornice, rustications and an entrance projection. The façades of the building are five-axial, with a preserved centre line, which is based on a faux entrance projection with a balcony. The load-bearing walls are made of local stones - the Szydłowiec lime. Partition walls and basement vaults are an exception here, as they are made of full brick.

The historic building can only be viewed from the outside.
