The preserved part of a grand Renaissance structure of a residential type, once serving as the seat of the von Kittlitz family.

History of the structure

The construction of a grand manor house was completed in 1602. The residence was erected for the commander of the Johannites Order, Johann Christoph von Kittlitz, most probably according to the design by A. Alberti of Urbino. The building, preserved to this day, is a redesigned version of the older manor house from the 16th century. The date of completion of the redevelopment is visible on the Renaissance portal, which adorns the main entrance to the building. The manor house was modernised after 1700 and later refurbished after the flood of 1863. The most recent full-scale renovation took place in the years 1970-1974, when it was converted into a seat of the Archaeological Museum of the Middle Odra Region.

Site description

At first, the manor house was a three-wing structure. Currently, the west wing is missing. The L-shaped structure, preserved to this day, features tall gables covered with gable roofs. The façade corners display remnants of the sgraffito decorations. This two-storey structure featured basements, but they were backfilled. A large hallway and other rooms on the ground floor are covered with wooden, profiled ceilings, partially polychromed, originating from around 1700. One of the rooms on the ground floor is adorned with a faux barrel vault with lunettes and stucco decorations. This is the so-called knights’ room, which served as a Lutheran chapel in the years 1742-1746. In the 1970s the manor house was considerably remodelled due to the planned adaptation into the archaeological museum. Currently, the exhibition rooms present archaeological finds from the former Zielonogórskie Voivodeship, dated from the late Palaeolithic period (approx. 13th century BC) to the early modern period. The manor house is adjoined by the park, which was regularly arranged in the Romantic era. Later it was transformed into a landscape park. Only residues of the historic tree stands have survived to this day. Two manor outbuildings stand next to the manor house, at the former utility yard. These are single-storey buildings set on a rectangular floor plan: an older one from the late 18th century and a newer one from the first half of the 19th century. For many years after the war the buildings were administered by the State Agricultural Holding. Currently, they are a private property.

Visitor access. The manor house building hosting the exhibition rooms of the Archaeological Museum of the Middle Odra Region is available all year round within museum opening hours.
