A Late-Gothic rural church originating from the late 14th/early 15th century and subsequently redesigned in the early 16th century.

The church is surrounded by a cemetery circumscribed by a stone wall.

History

The first mentions of the church date back to 1385; the building was most likely erected in the late 14th or early 15th century. Its current form, however, is the result of a redesign which took place in the early 16th century. The building was renovated in the 19th century, in the years 1968, 1972-73, 1975 and in the early 21st century.

Description

The church is situated on the top of the hill, in the heart of the village, on the eastern side of the local road. It is surrounded by an old cemetery. It is a Late Gothic structure oriented towards the east, with its individual sections being arranged additively around its single nave. The building is a masonry structure made of split stone. The church consists of a broad nave on a roughly square floor plan as well as a narrower, rectangular chancel; both sections of the church share a common gable roof. A massive tower designed on a square floor plan adjoins the church to the west, featuring an octagonal upper section topped with a low pyramid roof. The sacristy annex, covered by an extension of the main roof of the church, adjoins the chancel to the north. The northern wall of the nave is pierced with the main entrance, framed with a pointed-arch portal. The windows vary in size and are all topped with blunt pointed arches. The tower features small windows in stone surrounds. A small, stone shrine, believed to be a penitential shrine, is embedded in the eastern wall of the chancel. The chancel section of the interior features a stellar vault. A stone tabernacle, designed in the Gothic style, is set against the background of the eastern wall of the chancel, featuring a sculpted head of Christ incorporated into its steep, decorative gable as well as painted decorations dating back to the late 15th century, portraying what are believed to be the scenes of the Annunciation and Visitation, surrounded by elaborate architectural scenery.

The church is accessible to visitors and may be visited during church service. For more information, please contact the parish office.
